Dave Young

In The Beginning…
In 2003, Don Sallan started playing golf with a small group of guys that played three days a week: Don, Dave Young, Bob Keller and a couple that are unknown. Al Freeman joined not long after. Bob Keller still plays till this day but the rest have slowly been unable to join us. We wish them all well.
Where We Are Now….
JERRY THOMPSON – Jerry has been a Summit Member for about 5 years. Shortly after becoming a Summit Member, he was invited to join the group by Bob Keller. He remembered some of the guys as being Bob K., Al Grimstad and a few others but as time passed the group changed members. Jerry said “I think of these guys as family, with me being the father figure.” He laughs and says, “But because of my age, not necessarily my wisdom. I just love being with the group both on and off the course – sharing fun, laughter and good times. I’m truly grateful to have you guys in my life.” Jerry turned 80 last February (see below) and still looks great and plays a mean game of golf. Jerry passed away on August 29, 2019.

AL GRIMSTAD – Al comes to us all the way from Sweden. Al’s been friends with Jerry Thompson for over 20+ years. Al’s our oldest playing member of the group and still shoots a mean round.
JERRE HAYNES – “Barbara and I purchased our home in Lincoln in September 2005. At that time we were not planning on moving to Lincoln for a couple of years as we were remodeling our home in Millbrae. We did spend several weekends a month in Lincoln prior to moving in full time and met our neighbors, Richard and Donna Brown. Rich Brown was an avid golfer and was playing golf with Don Sallan. Rich invited me to join their group. At that time I believe it was Richard Brown, Don Sallan, myself, then Dave Young joined and Jim Loyd”. Over the years, Jerre invited Al Freeman, Tom Watson, Allan Wong, and Mike Back to join the group. “So glad our group has grown over the years”, he commented.
Before Jerre started thinking of retirement, he spent 32 years with Western Electric in San Leandro, CA holding various management positions within the company. He started in the machine shop, then Methods (where he met his wonderful wife Barbara) and then was promoted to First Level Supervisor in the Repair Shop. Jerre said, “I then moved to Manager of the Northern CA Warehouse, where we shipped a million dollars worth of phone equipment and supplies daily. My final promotion was to manage the seven Western States where we shipped equipment and supplies to the WE installers and phone companies in CA, OR, WA, CO, NV, UT and AZ. I was there until I retired.”
“That was the Good Old Days!! No cell phones and limited computers!!! Now on to the Best Days!! GOLF and Vacations.”
JIM LOYD – “Shari and I operated and owned Health Care Facilities for developmentally disabled adults and children. These facilities were in Fresno and Bakersfield. We sold the business in 1998 and moved from Fresno to Portola in 2006 and joined Grizzly Ranch Golf Club. We jumped back and forth between Portola and Sun City Lincoln Hills starting in 2010.”
They moved to SCLH in 2014. A couple of years after being here (around 2012), Jim and Shari were teamed up with Al Freedman on the Hills course. “Al asked me if I would like to be introduced to the group he plays with?” Jim replied “Yes”. With a sad note Jim says, “ I believe the only ones left from that group (that don’t play or is no longer with us) are Bob Keller and Jerre Haynes.”
BILL MCKENNA– Bill was born in Oakland CA in 1944 and grew up in Cupertino and San Jose. In 1971 he got his teaching credentials at U.C Berkley. Bill said, “I taught in 1972 for two years at the College of San Mateo, but in 1972 I decided to open my own auto body shop, Golden West Auto Body. I finally sold it January 1, 2000. I opened an auto collision business but just didn’t make enough money so I sold it. I just flopped around since then.”
Bill lived in Santa Cruz for 25 years and moved to Lincoln in 2009. He was playing golf one day in 2013 and ran into Jerry Thompson who asked him to play in the group. The rest is history.
Bill and Sharon do not live in SCLH, but he drives over from Twelve Bridges to join our group. So glad he does.
Bill passed on February 26, 2024

TOM & JODY WATSON– Tom was born in a small coal mining town in Pennsylvania. Tom said “I had to get out of PA so I joined the US Navy at age 17 and became a Navy diver and corpsman. After leaving the Navy and completing my education I moved to the West Coast where I eventually joined Kaiser Permanente. During my Kaiser days I took a leave of absence and joined the Air Force as an anesthetist. I later returned to Kaiser where I retired after 26-years of service.“ Tom has 2 adult, married children and 5 grandchildren. Tom added, “We are expecting our first great-grandchild in May.” Congratulation Tom and Jody!
Jody was born in Iowa, the second of 8 siblings. “I have 2 adult sons, 1 married and 1 single. While raising my 2 sons in San Diego as a single parent, I completed my college education and became a Certified Public Accountant. After moving to Lafayette, I became the managing partner of a local CPA firm.” Jody is currently a Principal in another Walnut Creek firm and works part-time from her home office (and not playing enough golf with her golf group). Jody (our only female member), joined at the end of 2017.
Tom and Jody met through tennis in 1992. “We moved to Lincoln 3 years ago. Our hobbies are golf, pickleball and gardening.” With a big smile, Tom said, “Our greatest treasures are family and friends and time spent with the Bogey Men and our dog, Casey.”
As Jody put so well, “Tom said this should be a short paragraph – but what in life is actually short but what men say is 6-inches.”
ALLAN WONG – Allan joined the group in 2015 after being invited by his neighbor, Jerre. “Let’s see, I was born and raised in San Francisco and moved to San Pablo in 1986. I started learning to play golf at Woodrow Wilson High School but stopped playing because I was chasing women, working, raising kids and didn’t have the time nor the funds to play!”
“When I turned 40, in 1998, I picked the game back up, playing at most of the East Bay courses with various friends and colleagues, Franklin Canyon being my home course. I worked for the SF Sheriffs’s Dept. from March 1985 until March 2013.” Happily he said, “I did achieve the rank of Captain (temporary position) but retired as a Lieutenant.”
Allan moved here July 2015 and started playing golf with the Bogey Men around September. “Overall my life’s been a journey filled with ups and downs but I’ve been blessed to have settled here and met so many great people like the group! I’m sure I could have added a lot more but then I’d have to share all the bad shit that happened in between!”
BOB BRUNNER – “My parents took up golf when I was 10. We would go to Frank’s driving range in south suburban Chicago. It was a real tin cup range with an assortment of clubs you could borrow….the kid’s clubs were adult clubs with cut down shafts. I started left handed (bat lefty in bb) but Frank told me to switch which I did. Frank looked like an iron worker and he hit the ball low and about 200 yds. And out the ball would rise at 45 degrees….”he killed it.” First golf course (Dixie Hi…because it was on the Dixie Highway) was a 9 hole flat course with no bunkers…ball would roll about 75 yards. Then my parents joined a CC that had a course originally built around 1908 but modified around 1915 by Donald Ross. I was Jr. club champ at least once. I played there until my family moved to LA in 1959 where my parents joined Riviera CC which was 5 minutes from our house. I played golf for University HS in west LA…was third man…made the team by qualifying at Wilshire CC and our team’s course was Brentwood CC. In my senior year we were unbeaten. I often played after school with buddies who were either club members or we helped them sneak on to Riviera. My first year of college was at Cal State Northridge where I made the team (6th man) and got a varsity letter. I was 16 turned 17 that year and pretty immature…after getting a varsity letter I stopped playing and didn’t restart for about 12 years. Thereafter, I played as I could depending on work and weather.”
“I played more consistently when I moved to Reno in 1989. I joined Hidden Valley after several years there and played inter-club matches. When I moved to Auburn I played various courses as a single until meeting Allan at LHGC in May 2017 and you know the rest….my game has declined; I have been fleeced by the Bogeymen and spend my time planning revenge.”
Bob and Jamie do not live in Lincoln Hills but he makes a 15-20 minute drive from their ranch on the days the Bogey Men play. “I have enjoyed my time with the group, the great friendships, people who care about each other and are serious but not annoying about golf. Relatively fast players who enjoy socializing outside of the game. The friendships are really important at our age.”
In regard to non-golf personal life, he met Jamie at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati where he worked as a psychologist and researcher and Jamie as a lab technician. Jamie went on to earn her PhD in Physiology at the med school in Cincinnati. They shared interest in horseback riding and have owned horses most of their 42 year marriage. They have two kids (Renee, from Bob’s first marriage, who is 47 and has two kids and Craig who is 34 and has one kid). The kids live in the Bay area. “I was a professor at U. of Nevada, Reno and Jamie taught anatomy and physiology at Truckee Meadows Community College.”
“We have a 6 acre property in Auburn where we keep 2 horses. Jamie has a horse, that she shows over fences, at a nearby training facility. We initially picked Auburn because my family was in Sac and are happy we did. Looking forward to staying on this place as long as possible, ditto for golf at LHGC.”
MIKE MCBACK – Nancy and I moved here in 2016 from Roseville (big move). I hadn’t played golf since 2009 so I started trying it again November 2016. I was playing on a Saturday morning in May of 2017 and was paired up with Jerre Haynes. We had played about 12 or so holes and he asked if I would like to come check out their group and see if I would like to join. He was great playing the round with, so I did. I met the greatest group of guys you could imagine. At that point I became a member and started playing the three days a week they played. At some point being the new guy, I got wrangled into coordinating the weekly tee times (I do really like doing it though).
I was in the Army for 3 years and spent most of the time in Aschaffenburg Germany. I left as a Spc. 4 and enjoyed my time there very much.
In 1978 I went to work for Western Electric and worked for them for 1 year then moved to AT&T. I met the woman of my life in 1980 but it took a long time to get her to go out with a hippie. In 1985 she finally gave in and we were married in Dec of 1986. We have 9 grandkids and 1 great-grandson.
JACK BOWKER – Jack joined in July last year and is our local airline attendant for Southwest and is married to Marlene. Jack says, “I don’t live at SCLH and always came out as a single. I think Paul said, “Why don’t you play with these guys” and I said, “Why not” and the rest is history. Love all you guys and really look forward to the Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays when I’m off. I was born and raised on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in So Cal. I’ve been in Sacramento since 1977 and am a 4 yr Army Veteran. We have 4 kids and 10 grandkids (8 boys).
RON WETHERFORD – Ron joined the group in August. He’s Allan’s next door neighbor and came from the Bay Area also. Ron hasn’t played much with us but I’m sure we’ll get to know him soon.
Rob Davies: Jean and Rob moved to Lincoln Hills in 2016 from Washington state to take advantage of the lifestyle and be closer to their grandkids (Cameron Park). Rob joined the Bogeymen in the Fall of 2019 and is loving the friendships and comradery of the group.
Rob grew up on a farm near Hastings, MN, attended college at University of MN, Duluth and went into the Air Force after graduating AFROTC. After 14 years active duty, he decided to try civilian life but remained in the Reserves to fulfill his 20 years. He retired from the Reserves in 1996 and from his civilian work in 2013. Rob claims this is the “Best” job I’ve ever had by far.
“I love coming to work at the golf course, but the commute can sometimes become stressful. There are days it takes me almost a minute to get there.” Great to be part of such a fun group.
